When it comes to vaping, there are many misconceptions about its safety. Myths about vaping have held people back from becoming smoke-free sooner and lead to restrictions on the innovation of new vape products that could help others quit smoking.
To help set some of these myths straight, we’re sharing the truth behind these misconceptions.
Myth 1 - Vaping Can Cause ‘Popcorn Lung’
One of the most prevailing concerns people seem to have about vaping is that it can cause a condition known as ‘popcorn lung’. This came about due to the fact that a chemical called diacetyl is used in some E-Liquids to create a buttery flavour.
At very high levels, diacetyl has been linked to a lung disease called bronchiolitis obliterans. It is known as popcorn lung, as the condition was originally noted among workers in a popcorn factory.
It is a myth that vaping in the UK can cause popcorn lung, as in the UK diacetyl is banned in E-Liquids and e-cigarettes. Even when diacetyl is present in an E-Liquid, it is at a level several hundred times lower than it is in cigarette smoke, and even smoking is not considered a major risk for this very rare disease.
Myth 2 - Vaping is Not Regulated
There are many misconceptions about the rules and regulations for vaping. The fact is, e-cigarettes and E-Liquid in the UK have very strict regulations to ensure that products sold meet safety standards.
All vape products must meet the standards set out under the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016 Act. Products must also meet UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency standards.
This means that all e-cigarette products sold in the UK have been professionally regulated.
Myth 3 - Vaping is as Harmful as Smoking
While vaping is not risk-free, research has shown that it is far safer than smoking. Public Health England concluded that vaping is 95% safer than smoking.
Cigarettes contain over 7,000 chemicals, around 70 of which are carcinogenic. E-Liquid is free from most of these chemicals and does not contain carbon monoxide or tar like cigarettes do.
Myth 4 - Second-hand Vapour is Harmful
Second-hand smoking is known to put people at higher risk of cancer. As such, many believe that inhaling second-hand vapour could have similar effects.
E-Liquid is made up of vegetable glycerin, propylene glycol, nicotine and flavourings. The exhaled aerosol (vape cloud) does not contain any of the cancer-causing chemicals or poisonous gases that are in cigarette smoke.
In 2018, Public Health England reviewed the risk of second-hand vapour and concluded that there has been no identified health risk of passive vaping.
Myth 5 - Vaping Doesn’t Help You Stop Smoking
There is now a wealth of evidence to support how effective vaping is at helping people to quit smoking. Out of the 3.2 million people who vape in the UK, more than half are now considered ex-smokers.
On top of this figure, around 800,000 more have quit smoking through the use of vaping, and then gone on to give up vaping too!
Vaping is considered to be the most beneficial way of quitting smoking. In 2019, a research study funded by the National Institute for Health Research concluded that vaping was twice as effective at helping people stop smoking than other nicotine replacements, such as patches.
