If you vape or are thinking of switching to vaping, then you may have come across the terms ‘VG’ and ‘PG’ when looking into different types of E-Liquid and vape kit types. VG and PG are in every type of E-Liquid you can find, making up the base of your vape juice.
We share all you need to know about VG and PG, and how it impacts your E-Liquid, so you can choose the right vape product for you.
What is VG?
VG stands for Vegetable Glycerin, which is an ingredient used in lots of food products, including yoghurt and baked goods, as well as being used for smoke machines. It is what helps make the vapour cloud when you vape.
Higher levels of VG in your E-Liquid will mean you experience a bigger vape cloud. If making huge clouds of vapour is something you strive for, then you can get 100% VG E-Liquid (like shortfills) to achieve this. A larger percentage of VG in a vape juice will also offer a smoother throat hit and slight sweet taste.
What is PG?
PG stands for Propylene Glycol, which is an artificial liquid mixing ingredient commonly used in foods, as well as ointments and lotions.
The main job of PG is to bind together all of the other ingredients in the E-Liquid, like flavour and nicotine. The PG itself is tasteless and has no odour, meaning that it doesn’t have an impact on the smell or taste of your vape juice.
Another function of PG is that it helps create the ‘throat hit’ feeling when you vape, which mimics the experience of smoking cigarettes. The higher the percentage of PG in the vape juice, the stronger the throat hit will be.
How Do I Know the VG PG of my Vape Juice?
The VG and PG amounts will be shown on the packaging of your vape product as either a ratio or a percentage. For example, a bottle that says 70/30 is a 70% VG, 30% PG E-Liquid.
Which VG PG Ratio Is Right For Me?
This depends on your preferences for vaping! Want big clouds? Choose a juice with a higher VG content (70/30 or 100%). Prefer a stronger throat hit? Opt for a 40/60 vape for a higher proportion of PG.
A 50/50 vape is a good place to start as it offers a more balanced vaping experience, and you can decide from there if you want more/less cloud and more/less throat hit! Our range of 10ml E-Liquids
are all 50/50 blends.
Most salt nicotine products, like our nzo vape pods
and novo disposable vapes, will also contain 50% VG and 50% PG.
Are VG and PG Safe?
VG and PG are both used widely in food products, which should hopefully put your mind at ease in regards to them being safe to consume. Public Health England estimates that vaping is 95% safer than smoking cigarettes
based on the significant reduction in toxic and harmful ingredients in E-Liquid compared to cigarettes.
PG, for example, is not toxic or carcinogenic, with 45% of it passing through the kidneys, with the remainder broken down into lactic acid.
